People do what they want
I've long had the belief that people will ALWAYS do what they want. I've been told its rubbish but none-the-less here what I believe...
- People will always do what they want unless internally (within themselves something stops them) or externally they are inhibited by one or multiple factors.
- People will never do what they want unless forced by some external factors.
- If people are forced to do things, they do not want to do they will not do them as well as if they themselves wanted it.
and here is why I believe that...
The Want Scale Example:
|
INHIBITORS |
|
|
INTERNAL |
EXTERNAL |
I want to do
something and there is nothing to stop me.
I will do it |
No internal fears of repercussion or reprisal |
External inhibitors exist such as The law, public opinion, opinion of friends or relatives. |
I do not want
to do something I am told I must do. They will
then do the task but almost never as well (speed and quality) as when they
wanted and enjoyed doing it. |
The individual has internal fears of repercussion or reprisal. These are perhaps driven by love for
another so a fear of hurting or disappointing them as an example. |
They do it in order to live (work). Peer pressure (which falls into the internal) They do it under duress. Truly forced like a jail/prison
term or under threat of physical harm to themselves or others |
The just won’t
do it because they don’t want to and have no forces making them. |
No internal fears of repercussion or reprisal |
External inhibitors exist such as The law, public opinion, opinion of friends or relatives. |
Now to put that into a personal example:
|
INHIBITORS |
|
|
INTERNAL |
EXTERNAL |
I want to
loose weight. Note: I may
choose a way that is unhealthy or risky but if there are not variables I feel
more important I will do it. |
No internal fears of repercussion or reprisal In fact I may even be supported by various external
opportunities or personnel |
Nothing to stop me if I truly want it regardless of any
health or other aspects that may be deleterious. |
I’m told I
must lose weight for health reasons They will
then do the task but almost never as well (speed and quality) as when they
wanted and enjoyed doing it. |
I don’t want to lose weight but I love my spouse more and
want her affection and to be proud of me.
These are my internal fears of repercussion or reprisal driven by love
for another so a fear of hurting or disappointing them. |
There are so many external forces that could push this
but from my perspective it all boils down to influencing the internal. |
I don’t want
to lose weight and nothing stops me. |
No internal fears of repercussion or reprisal |
I may even get support from co-dependent family or spouse |
